First unit deployed, 1,200 units delivered in succession! Weichai Drives Green Upgrades for Public Transit in Ethiopia
2026.06.08Recently, the first gas-converted bus in Ethiopia, powered by Weichai’s core engine technology and supported by its comprehensive technical solutions, officially entered trial operation, marking a breakthrough as the country’s first natural gas-powered public bus project.

Weichai has been deeply rooted in Ethiopia for 13 years, consistently maintaining the leading market share in local bus power systems. In response to Ethiopia's push for energy structural transformation, Weichai leveraged its mature, leading gas power solutions to spearhead the country's first bus conversion project, providing an integrated “design-implementation-after-sales” chain of service.

Weichai dispatched a professional technical team to provide deep integration support, creating a cost-effective, customized retrofit solution. By developing tailored natural gas engines and performing rigorous vehicle system commissioning and performance calibration, the company ensured the stability and performance of the converted vehicles;
To strengthen local operational capabilities, Weichai conducted specialized maintenance training for local service stations and bus operators, covering both theoretical knowledge and practical skills for natural gas engines.

The Weichai WP10NG natural gas engine powering these buses offers distinct advantages, including robust power, high efficiency, reliability, low gas consumption, and environmental friendliness.
With the successful trial of the first prototype, Weichai will continue to facilitate the delivery of 1,200 natural gas power units and associated equipment, accelerating the green and low-carbon transformation of local public transportation.
