China Central TV’s Focus: Weichai Takes Responsibility and Drives the Creation of New D1 standard for Diesel Engine Lubricating Oil in China

2025.07.19

China's first D1 standard for diesel engine oil was officially released to the world via CCTV Video on the afternoon of July 18. Weichai, a key participant in the formulation of the standard, witnessed a milestone moment in China's standardization efforts during the live broadcast and shared and introduced the first low-viscosity lubricating oil that meets the D1 standard, which was jointly developed by Weichai.

For a long time, China's diesel engine lubricant standards have followed Europe and the United States, with core technologies being controlled by others. Since 2016, Weichai has formed the "China Standard Development and Innovation Alliance for Engine Lubricants" with more than 40 research institutions and leading enterprises in the industry, including the Society of Internal Combustion Engines of China, the Society of Automotive Engineers of China, and China Automotive Technology and Research Center, aiming at the predicament of the lubricant standard and certification system being "strangled" by foreign countries.

Over the past decade, Weichai, relying on its strong R&D capabilities, has played the role of a "chain leader" in the industrial chain and efficiently coordinated upstream and downstream enterprises. Focusing on the technical characteristics of heavy-duty diesel engines in China, complex road conditions and the demand for long oil change cycles, it has jointly developed with alliance units the most suitable lubricant evaluation methods for Chinese operating conditions, picking the pearl on the technical crown of standards. It has helped China make a historic leap from a standard follower to an industry rule-remaker.

During this period, Weichai worked closely with Kunlun Lubricants to break through the "last mile" of standard industrialization and jointly developed the first low-viscosity lubricant that met the D1 standard. The oil has technical advantages such as lower fuel consumption and less emissions. After a year of rigorous testing, the oil change cycle was increased from 60,000 kilometers to 120,000 kilometers, and the extreme test even reached 140,000 kilometers, greatly reducing the wear of engine parts, extending the service life of the engine, improving the engine availability rate, and reducing the maintenance cost for customers.

In the future, with the promotion and application of the D1 standard, China's diesel engine lubricating oil industry will embark on the path of independent development. Weichai, as an important driver of this process, will continue to uphold patriotism, be confident in technology, shoulder the responsibility of a state-owned enterprise, forge ahead on the road of leading China's power industry towards a higher level of self-reliance and self-strengthening in science and technology, and contribute more to the rise of China's industry.
