CCTV Spotlight | China’s First Offshore Hydrogen-Ammonia-Methanol Integrated Project Secured by Weichai’s Reliable Power

China’s first offshore hydrogen–ammonia–methanol integrated project, located in Yantai, Shandong Province, was recently completed and has officially entered the commissioning phase. This milestone marks a foundational step toward verifying the full process of offshore hydrogen production and sets the stage for the project’s operational launch.

Notably, the project is backed by the 1,000 kW 12WH17 power generation unit from Weichai, a subsidiary of Shandong Heavy Industry Group, which provides a high-efficiency and highly reliable emergency backup power source.

As China’s first demonstration project covering the full offshore hydrogen energy chain—from production and storage to transportation and utilization—the initiative leverages off-grid offshore renewable energy to produce green hydrogen. The hydrogen is then converted into ammonia and methanol, two chemical products that serve both as clean marine fuels and as key industrial feedstocks, with broad applications across the chemical and energy sectors.

In addition, the project includes the construction of China’s first semi-submersible offshore hydrogen production platform, which stands over 50 meters tall—equivalent to a 17-story building—and weighs more than 20,000 tonnes. This platform is poised to serve as a future offshore refueling station for ocean-going vessels, laying the groundwork for China’s advancement into deep-sea new energy development.

Weichai’s 12WH17 power generation engine features a vermicular graphite iron block and cylinder head and a forged steel crankshaft, delivering high structural rigidity and safety margins. Designed for high output and elevated explosion pressures, the engine boasts excellent performance in power, reliability, and fuel efficiency, making it more environmentally friendly. It also offers integrated power solutions and full life-cycle service support. Field-proven for its high efficiency and outstanding economic performance, the product has earned strong recognition from customers.
